Founding of Norwegian Electric Systems (NES)

2009

Norwegian Electric Systems is established and focuses on developing advanced electric power, automation and control systems for the maritime industry.

Quadro Drive launched

2010

Quadro Drive gives vessel designers new flexibility in the electrical power system configuration and redundancy. This modular propulsion drive becomes a foundational technology for later electrical vessel designs.

BlackOut Safety System introduced

2010

Developed for DP2 and DP3 operations with closed bus-tie configuration, BOSS monitors generator health and instantly disconnects faulty units while performing ultra-fast load reduction. This prevents faults from spreading and allows the vessel to maintain position instead of losing power.

First large-scale DP system

2011

Contract signed to deliver electrical systems for the self-propelled jack-up Seajacks Zaratan in Dubai, including a six-part AC ring for DP2 operations. A milestone in early AC-ring design.

World’s largest low-voltage propulsion system

2018

Contract signed to deliver a complete diesel-electric system for the 127-metre offshore construction vessel Grand Canyon. At 23 500 kVA, this is the largest low-voltage electrical installation on a vessel at the time.

QUEST launched

2016

Quadro Energy Storage Technology is introduced, a scalable lithium-ion battery system for megawatt-scale marine applications. Designed for both newbuilds and retrofits, QUEST becomes the foundation for NES' hybrid and fully electric vessel projects.

Odin’s Eye launched

2016

Odin’s Eye is introduced, a DC grid solution that allows variable speed on generators, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Built on proven Quadro Drive technology, the system splits essential equipment into self-contained "islands" rather than relying on a traditional two-part switchboard. This is a key step on the road to hybrid and fully electric propulsion.

Quadro Master DC switchboards launched

2017

Launch of Quadro Master, a modular DC switchboard forming the heart of NES’ DC power systems. The system distributes power through a common DC bus where converters for motors, generators, batteries and shore charging are integrated in one unit. The power system foundation for battery-driven and future vessels.

Offshore goes hybrid: first battery retrofit

2017

Contract signed to deliver battery containers for Havila Charisma, Havila Foresight and Skansi Sjoborg. The 625 kWh plug-and-play systems serve as spinning reserve during DP operations, allowing vessels to run fewer generators and saving an average of 15–20 per cent on fuel.

First electric ferries

2017

Fjord1 orders complete DC grid systems for three fully electric ferries. MF Husavik, MF Austrått and MF Vestrått will operate on the Sandvikvåg–Husavik and Brekstad–Valset routes with battery storage up to 1 600 kWh. This is NES’ entry into ferry electrification.

Egersund Technology Centre established

2017

A dedicated facility for development and testing of navigation systems is opened in Egersund. The centre becomes the main hub and development centre for Raven INS and strengthens in-house expertise ahead of future integrated bridge deliveries.

First fully automated charging station

2018

Contract signed to deliver the first fully automated shore charging system for MF Husavik on the Husavik–Sandvikvåg route. The system enables hands-free charging of 2 500 kW during turnaround. This becomes NES’ first route to operate fully electric.

World’s largest battery pack on a vessel

2018

Contract signed to deliver complete power, automation and navigation systems for Havila Kystruten's four new coastal vessels on the Bergen–Kirkenes route. The battery systems alone exceed 6 100 kWh, equivalent to around 100 electric cars. The ships become the most environmentally friendly ro-pax vessels along the Norwegian coast. Havila Castor later becomes the first commercial cruise vessel to sail emission-free through the Geirangerfjord.

From bridge to thruster

2019

Norwegian Electric Systems and Norwegian Control Systems merge, bringing power, automation and navigation together under one roof. The merger follows years of close collaboration after Havyard Group became majority owner of NES in 2015.

Type approval for Raven INS

2020

Raven INS receives DNV type approval as an Integrated Navigation System, covering ECDIS, chart radar, heading and track control, and bridge alert management. First delivery follows the same year, to the live fish carrier Reisa.

HAV Group ASA is established

2021

HAV Group ASA is formed and listed on Euronext Growth, bringing together four sister companies: HAV Design, HAV Hydrogen, Norwegian Greentech and Norwegian Electric Systems.

Largest battery pack to date on a ferry

2022

Cemre Shipyard awards NES a contract to deliver battery and control systems and act as system integrator for Scandlines' new zero-emission freight ferry, The Baltic Whale. The scope includes energy design, a 10 MWh battery pack, DC switchboard, generators, Raven INS and automation systems. The ferry will operate between Rødby in Denmark and Puttgarden in Germany.

World’s most powerful maritime charging system

2022

Contract signed to deliver a 15 MW shore charging system for Scandlines' roro vessel The Baltic Whale, connected to a dedicated 50 kV grid link. The fully automated system enables charging in roughly 20 minutes per port.

First DP DC ring system

2023

Contract signed for the first DC ring-based power system for dynamic positioning, featuring Odin's Eye in a six-zone closed-bus configuration. If one zone fails, the others remain unaffected. The system will be delivered for GC Rieber Shipping's Windkeeper vessels, enabling safe operations in offshore wind.

Building blocks for autonomous vessels

2023

Acquisition of Undheim Systems adds DP-0 technology to the portfolio, key building blocks for future autonomous systems. The Raven JPOS joins the navigation product family and strengthens the team in Egersund. 

World’s first autonomous ferry project

2024

Development contract signed with Fjord1 for the Lavik–Oppedal project. The autonomous scope includes autodocking, collision avoidance and auto-crossing for four fully electric ferries across the Sognefjord, and a remote control centre on land. NES will also deliver complete power, automation and navigation systems for the ferries, including charging stations on both sides of the fjord.

Auto Q launched

2024

Introduction of in-house DC power management system integrated in the Quadro Master DC grid. Auto Q enhances coordinated power distribution, boosts hybrid performance and enables seamless integration with the NES product family and future zero-emission solutions.

Entering short sea cargo

2025

A tailor-made competitive DC and control system is developed for the short sea market. Eight newbuild bulk carriers being constructed at Udupi Cochin Shipyard for Wilson will receive the compact DC switchboard design, which takes up less space and brings proven technology to the segment. The largest order in this segment to date for NES.

Raven INS 2.0 released

2025

The second generation of Raven INS comes with improved integration, performance and user interface. New functionality from Raven JPOS and the DP-0 package is now included. The same year, NES receives DNV certification for its thruster control system.
