A day in the life of a project engineer

As a Project Engineer at Norwegian Electric Systems, Ole Martin’s main goal is to ensure that electrical and hybrid solutions are integrated, tested, and functioning as they should. He follows these systems from the initial design phase right through to final checks, focusing on reliability under real-life conditions.

“Seeing how every link in the chain, from shore charging to the propellers, fits into a bigger system is extremely rewarding,” Ole Martin explains. “It’s not just about each component running on its own, but how they all work together. That perspective keeps me interested, because small changes can have a real impact on the overall result.”

His career began as an apprentice ship’s electrician, where he quickly developed a taste for tackling technical challenges at sea. With experience in industrial and project management roles, plus a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Power Engineering, he joined NES in 2024, drawn by the chance to work on end-to-end electrical solutions. He now collaborates closely with his team to make sure motors, generators, and transformers align perfectly with the larger power distribution, and that every step along the way is done right.

In his job, he gets the opportunity to follow a vessel’s development from planning to launch, something he describes as both challenging and gratifying. He’s particularly interested in how one adjustment in the design can improve efficiency or reduce emissions across the entire operation. He also appreciates that NES has a straightforward chain of communication, making it easy to trade ideas and get quick feedback.

Outside the office, Ole Martin stays active in more ways than one. He kicks a football around with Nykronborg IL in the 5th division, works on his golf swing in Volda, and occasionally joins a League of Legends match when he’s in the mood for a different type of teamwork. He shares his life with his partner and their spirited Yorkshire terrier, a dog that has traded the classic show-dog look for a much tougher style.

For Ole Martin, it’s a satisfying blend: tackling complex projects at work and then stepping onto the field or into the outdoors in his spare time. He believes that same passion for effort and precision drives him to keep finding ways to improve the systems he works on, helping to move the maritime world toward more sustainable, efficient solutions.
